hi everyone!

I have a 73 Z1 900 that has been in bits for 3 years but I want to start building it up again.

I have had the motor vapour blasted and rebuilt it up to fitting cylinder head back on. Previously the tacho drive gear fouled up on the cam drive worm and damaged where the drive gear sits. I have TIG welded this and tried hand machining out where the tacho drive sits but I think it will not run true enough and will probably jam and cause damage again. Therefore I may weld up the hole completely for the tacho drive and fit an electronic ignition or try and source a different cylinder head.

My question is what is involved in fitting the electronic ignition, which ignition should I get and will I have to get a new tacho meter?

Hi Neal,
If you blank off your tacho drive you can replace your tacho head with an aftermarket electronic item. These work by counting low tension pulses in the ignition system, so you'll need to take a feed from one of the ignition coils to make it work. This should be clear in the wiring diagram which comes with the new tacho.
There are no implications for the ignition system, and no reason why you shouldn't continue to run on points if you wish. If you do want to fit electronic ignition go for the Dyna S system.

I followed the advice on here about the Dyna S ignition and can confirm it is very easy to fit and set up and is 100% grief free, unlike points.

I have just bought a head from flea bay and the tacho drive has clearly done something similar. The head came with the worm gear damaged on the cam. I wonder if this is a weak point? There is evidence of welding so I guess the same repair has been done. I would have thought that it should be possible to set the head up on an angle plate on a mill and re-machine the hole. It would probably be possible to get a slot drill of the right diameter and just run it in; if not a boring head with a small cutter would work. I'd volunteer but my mill is a bit poxy, but any small machineshop should have something big enough. Prolly go on a Bridgeport. Are you near Bristol? I know of a place in Bristol that could do it..

This is why it would be helpful if people would put their location in their profile so that people would know when local suggestions would be helpful. I'm not getting at Neal in particular here but it's been asked for before and 90% of new registrations don't do it.

Debbens in Ringwood could probably fix it (if it's repairable) and would have experience of this type of work.

Administrator, have you got a number for Debbens, would they be able to repair the worm drive on the cam as this chewed a bit when the damage looks to have happened?

Any idea who refurbishes the tacho and speedo clocks and again a rough price? also the engine warning lights assembly?

also any idea who would make the throttle/engine run handlebar assembly and clutch side lights on/off assembly like new again?

Dunno about warning lights.
There was an article in the newzletter sometime ago about painting up switch gear.
to refurb them with wires is not so hard as done it myself just takes time and thought not unless any one else can shed some light on this.
