Wrap it well in bubble wrap or similar....
Whack in a few handfuls of limestone aggregate (won't make a spark)....
Wedge into a small concrete/mortar mixer & run until cleaned out
SIMPLES

Thats my method too but i use Phosphoric acid instead, stuff called PH Down (on ebay) as it leaves a film over the metal preventing further rusting. Well i was told thats what it does & it seems to be true.

I used this on my J tank. Did a great job, but I did get the heavy rust off first using limestone pebbles and shaking the tank for hours.

Any time you use water or a water based solution it's best to use boiling water. That way when you come to tip it out the heat imparted into the steel helps dry out the residual moisture quicker.

VERY CAREFULLY grind the base of the tank from the top.
Once you get it split, you can clean and grind the inside of the tank and base with no obstruction at all.
Once you are happy with the finish, simply weld the seem together again.
If you are very lucky you might get away with touching up the bottom of the tank with a little brush with some Humbrol enamel.
Glad to be of some assistance.

Easy way that Ive just completely de rusted 2 gs750 tanks - 1 litre of halfords diluting rust eater (phosphoric acid based) fill tank to brim with the water / ruster soloution and leave for a couple of weeks, rinse well, hair dryer force dry and then a light petrol /oil wash

and from todays BBC 7 day quiz,
CORRECT! It's aluminium foil. A cheap way to remove rust from steel is to rub it with aluminium foil dipped in water
The Aluminium oxides and the rust reduces to iron.
They use rust and fine aluminum powder to weld railway lines together.
The rust turns to liquid iron joining the ends together !
So try dangling some bacofoil in your tank.
