I've got a strange fault with my 1978 z1000,engine runs well once started, but starting on the button is not right.Starting from cold and when warm engine just spins over lovely but won't fire, one kick on the kicker and it fires up straight away. The engine is fitted with electronic ignition, not by myself,Accell coils and what looks like a Dyna ignition control box, stator plate is unknown, could this be my problem.

Anthony....
Dyna S ignition does NOT use a control box... either a Boyer Bransden Pickle unit or sumat else?
1st, Check shes sparking when engines turning over on starter. If not check when kicking her over.

Cheers Pigford,I will check that out.If the ignition is wired up wrong so there is no spark when the starter button is pressed is this a wiring fault or ignition,I nipped out too the shed and pulled off a lead too check for a spark,it seems very weak or non existent when turned over on the button.

Does she start OK on kickstart? If so, probably either weak battery (how old) or dodgy connection somewhere. Give it all a good wiggle!?*?%@?

On a more serious note check the battery. If you get a good spark from the kickstarter and a weak one from the electric starter 9 times out of 10 its the battery.

Cheers Ian.

Hi Pigford no the Harris was at 5k min I turned down 4.5 last week because I had an offer of 5k but the guy turned up wanted the bike but did not have enough money and wanted to do a deal on a Yamaha XJR!! If it does not sell this sunday it stays for good and I will save up for a project bike. I have just bought an engine and been offered a frame by the same guy so the project may have already started. Worst thing about selling your own bike is dealing with idiots. PS how do you get the smiley faces on the text my daughter wants to know.

Cheers Ian.

Cheers Pigford need the face to show some people I am only kidding when replying to some of the posts. Thanks for the comment on the Harris your bike looks like it has had a lot of effort and thought put in. It is just the way I am hoping the project bike will one day turn out.

Hello Anthony, I could be a Dyna III ignition which did have a control box but these are very old and maybe suspect, if so replace it with the Dyna S, check the kill switch too as it could be wired to cut power to the coils but still allow power to the starter solonoid.
