Setting Ignition Timing

Hi, bike has not been revving properly since I bought it....runs pretty well up to 5-5.5k and then gets very lumpy. Thought I would check the timing with a strobe. This is at the edge of my mechanical competence, and as per usual Mr Haynes doesn't even reference what the marks are for.

I have Dyna S fitted, At tick over with strobe on the lines line up on the F mark with a 1 on the left and a 4 on the right...when revved to 3-5k, the line advances to the 4...it looks to me that it is not advancing enough...i.e. I suspect there is another mark behind the advance weight ?....if this is the case:

i) Is this the cause of the rev limiting ?
ii) Is advance unit knackered ?

Hello MysticZed, forget the strobe light, use the static method (with out the engine running), this is a more accurate and enables you to time the engine for full advance, after all the ignition timing at tick over or below 3-4000 rpm is less important than the ignition timing at higher rpm, you can download the instructions from the link on our website www.debben.co.uk under the description of the Dyna S, the actuall link is http://www.debben.co.uk/DS2-1info.pdf but not sure if this link will work from this forum.
Timing for full advance will also issolate the auto advance problem, if the springs are weak then the auto advance will advance too soon, but your full advance ignition timing will be correct.
