Shindingen Regulator/ Rectifier Markings - Meaning What??

Hi Folks
My Z650 is wearing an original Shindingen REG/ REC unit which is marked on the factory sticker as
SH521 - 12 2.3
Just got hold of a new spare which came in box with right part code (21066-029) and looks identical - but sticker is marked -
SH521 - 128 8.2
Are the two units interchangeable - I am guessing they are both SH521 model but is the rest a date code or what?
It doesn't look like the 8 has been rubbed off the original one.
Can any wise men on these units please enlighten me??
Thanks from Mark

Pretty hard to check those Shindinger marking's out.
If the 650 has a 3 phase alternator (as the z1).
Then, if they are both 6 wire units of the same physical size, I would run with it. Easy to check once it is connected.

Thanks Garn
They are both 4 wire units and size/ fitting holes matches exactly.
Three wires in a block connector go to the generator and a white wire with red stripe comes out on a bullet connector into the loom.
No earth wire - does that mean it gets earth through the electric panel it is bolted down on??

Thanks Paul
I think it's only B1 models with the early electrics. Mine has version two (is it called three phase??)
B1 rectifier has contact points in it I beleive.

SH means shunt - the newer FH ones are Mosfet. looks like single phase the black should be earth, yellow connects to the alternator and red/white out put. NO voltage sensing. 521 is the model and current handling code - 12 is for 12V and the other n=bits are probably just batch codes.

Ok Guys
here's a pic of the B1 type regulator - only used that first year - it has an armature and points inside the cover which need cleaning and adjusting...
and here's a quote from a Z650 site about the changeover to my type -
"The charging system was changed from a three-phase system to a two phase and the regulator and rectifier was now a combined unit. (regulator with cooling ribs)"
so I guess that makes the B1 unit three phase and my one a two phase - no mention I can find of a 650 with single phase unless someone out there can spot it.
What phase is a Z1 generator anyhow??
and why did later bikes use fewer phases - I thought more was generally better in most technologies??

Oh yeah
and this guy got the wrong routing for his carb vent hoses and the wrong colour hose - which was what I was basing my set up on until Paul corrected me GRRRRRRR!!!
Found some nos pink ones now though

Hi Guy
Just spotted your pics thanks.
That's interesting on the sticker - I think what I quoted as "8" could actually be a "B" now you have magnified it a bit more.
My new one matches your pics really well - did this one work on your 650 or is it an untested spare one?
