New Compressor...... Any thoughts?

#1 PostAuthor: Ginger Bear » Fri Feb 10, 2012 1:28 pm

I'm on the look out for a new compressor, needs to have a decent output so I can run my blast cabinet. I been looking at 3HP stuff and need something with around 10 cfm free air delivery.
Found this on ebay, I managed to find a couple of reviews on line, one glowing & one that wasn't very happy at all.

Should come with a VAT receipt as well. :D

Looks impressive for the money, anyone had any experience with this brand :?

Dunno about the brand but FWIW, that's the same sort of spec (3HP, 240V single phase, 14cfm) as I use and that runs my blasting cabinet with no real probs. Blasting with soda; the compressor ends up running pretty much 100% of the time. With beads its more like a 50% duty cycle.

Steve
We have two compressors
a Hydrovane 100 litre and it is the one I use on My blast cabinet
it is quiet and is not running at full capacity even doing soda blasting
the other one is a 2HP 150L but it is direct drive so it builds air very quickly
the trouble with the one You are looking at is that a belt drive compressor and builds air very slowly
go for a direct drive or a hydrovane if You can source one cheap second hand
way too many Zeds

Thanks for the replies so far.

It appears the ebay compressor can't really be fitted with a 13 amp plug (reading between the lines of the sellers reply). I am a great believer in "you get what you pay for" and that ebay compressor seems "too good to be true".

Phil, I don't think the one Yantosh is selling will give me the air delivery requirements I need.

Paul, you are gonna cost me a lot of dosh. Been looking at hydrovane's.

I got one from shiremoors about 14 years ago (they still advertise in the bike mags)
Belt drive .14cfm, 3hp ,150psi ,was £250 delivered at the time.
It's still going strong, but didn't stop if using the blaster so i have a bigger one for that.
From what i've seen most of these compressors are pretty generic with just a different name on.
Instructions said to hardwire it in to a 32amp spur but i just stuck a plug on , Job done and no trouble since.

I likewise just stuck a 13A plug on my 3HP one. The fuse blows every couple of years but that's it.

'Kin ell, I'm still in a dither.

I could get me hands on this;

http://www.sealey.co.uk/PLPageBuilder.a ... results=16

for £411 +VAT (The VAT is V important, as it'll be a 'company' purchase & I can claim it back.

I also remember Shiremoors ad's (Cheers Rob) & thought they were good value, I'm tempted by this baby;

Model ER 14/150 BELT DRIVE TWIN CYLINDER COMPRESSOR
14 cfm
3 hp 240v
150 litre receiver
Cost £412.00
Carriage £21.50
Special Offer 1/2" filter regulator with gauge £25.50
with this machine

If those prices include VAT, it comes in at £343.33 + VAT
:D

Also watching a 3 phase Hydrovane on ebay, that I should be able to run with an inverter from the likes of; http://www.drivesdirect.co.uk/?gclid=CO ... fAodnT7QLg

Oh what to do :?
