I have got stuck we the forks off my bike I cannot remove the bottom allen bolt to split the forks has anyone got any bright ideas to stop the inner damper sping. I have tried the old broom hand trick but no go, except a moan from the wife about oil on her broom handle.
Thanks

I have been there before......
I overcame the issue after buying one of those cheap compressor units from Aldi. Also bought a air wrench amongst over things to go with it.
Anyway, said air wrench with the right hex bit got them out in seconds. Put a wry smile on my face thinking about the time and effort I had expended on the job before the air wrench came along.....
If this isn't an option for you, you could take your forks and the right bits down to your local garage, I'm sure they would help...
Good luck

Think thats a 17mm head use a piece of threaded rod with a couple of nuts the right size locked together or better still welded on clamp rod in vice..

Whittle the end of a wooden broom handle at 45degs - knock it in firmly with a mallet - clamp broom handle in a vice - this will hold damper (without harming it) and enable allen bolt to be undone - SIMPLES

I used one of those "Gator grip" universal sockets on a long 3/8 extension bar, you know the ones with all the pins inside to grip broken bolt heads etc.
Here's a link to similar type, worked perfect, no hassle on the few sets of forks I've rebuilt so far.
