Z650 cable/ tube clamp - where does this go??

More help please people -

My Z650 came with three of these cable clamps. 2 large ones are for holding clutch cable in place.
Only 1 smaller one - part code 92037-1092 - it shows on the carb assy. fiche described as "Clamp air vent hose" -shown lowest of the three clamps here - It must go on one of the thinner frame tubes somewhere.

Anyone know exactly where it should go - there are two clear air vent pipes coming off the carbs - one to each side of the bike past the plastic baffle plate under the rear tank rubber.

One must need it and the other one not but it's got me baffled. Anyone with an original condition bike able to spot where it lives please??
Thanks from Mark

Mark, that smaller clamp has me baffled and I have had my 650 down to the last nut and bolt ????? There certainly isnt one on my B1 where ever it should go !!!!
Just out of interest I also zinc plated the two clutch cable clips which go on the downtube and someone with a lot more knowledege than me told me that they shouldnt be bright plated. When I bought some NOS ones for my Z1 ( which were missing ) they were not bright plated. Be interested to know for sure which is right.

Thanks Steve

The clamps should be olive drab as far as I know. But mine got stripped, de-rusted, zinced and they are now black powder coated - which seems to be flexible enough.

I just used that pic so folks could see it's size relative to the two larger clutch cable clamps.

I am gonna do some more digging on this - will try Z650 site and I've checked every picture in Kawa manual and can't see it shown anywhere.

Why would it be on only one side? it's a baffler for sure.

Ta from Mark

Ok 650 lovers... free 650 manual download here...
An update on the mystery clamp. One of our eagle eyed folk has spotted a picture of it fitted - in a genuine kawa service manual.
It's in the same place where mine was originally found - even though it was not clamping anything at the time...
so in the absence of any further info this is where it goes -
left side as you sit on the bike - on the frame down tube which runs between airbox and side panel. Will try and get a picture on here at some stage. Here's the manual if you are desperate to see it.
http://jarlef.no/Kawasaki/PDF/Z650/File ... manual.pdf
Its chapter 6 page 6-8 top right picture - with this explanation -
ROUTE THE CARBURETOR AIR VENT HOSES BETWEEN THE AIR CLEANER HOUSING AND THE FRAME PIPE, AND CLAMP THE LEFT AIR VENT HOSE TO THE FRAME
That leaves me with the question - Why does one hose need clamping and the other one not - assuming they are both the same length??
I always thought both carb breathers went up and past the frame baffle plate - but apparently it's only the loom that goes there.

mark it is only fitted to the left hand side to prevent it from falling onto the chain if it came detached from the carburettor

No way Paul - how simple is that for an answer.
Where did you get that little gem from? is it common to other kwakers from the period.

I was thinking it could be to do with different offset between pipe outlet and frame down tubes - with the left one requiring more holding into position. I must be thinking too hard about this re-build

Will deffo have a good close look and measure of this when my carbs go back on.
Do you have the correct dimensions for the carb air vent hoses listed anywhere mate??
Think I may need some new longer ones to get them routed like it shows in the picture.

the z650b1 was one of many training courses i attended when Kawasaki motors where in slough that was when the question about the single vent hose clamp was explained by Clive stokes who was kawasaki's technical training guy. sorry i don't know the length of the vent pipe i would guess about 300mm should be plenty

Thanks again Paul

I can't believe how lucky we all are to have a kawa trained technician on here.
More on the hoses - both same part number and dimensions so no difference between the sides
p/no. 92059-1045 which became 92059-1128

dimensions are 5x8x250 which I think is inner diameter, outer diameter and length in mm.

So that's what I will be making up. Am I right that they were clear transparent plastic tubing from the factory??

Does anyone out there have a nos one in their stash :?:

I'm gonna post all of this on the 650 forum and they will think I am a right little guru/ geek

Ok Guys,
Think I have got as far as I can with this one for now.
Here's the "definitive" extract from the 1981 KZ650 Kawasaki Service Manual to show how the two carb air vent hoses should be routed, and where the mystery clamp belongs....

Image

... as with all old bike stories there is still some debate currently raging - over on the kz650.info forum re. whether the little clamp should even be on a pre 1981 bike at all. The only part number I could find for the pipe does not list on bikes earlier than 1980.
Anyhow - if you got the clamp this is where I would stick it - and the pipe is listed as 25cm long to get the right look.
Cheers from Mark
