i got hold of an airbox silencer but the foam behind the mesh is disintegrating into bits, is a replacement available or do i make something? if i can get it out.

There is no replacement available but it's quite simple to make, you will need a piece of foam 155mm x 205mm x 15 - 20mm, warm the end of the plastic with a hair drier and it will soften enough to pull the element out past the lipped end. the actual thickness is 15mm but thicker foam can be used and is probably better, but it is a little more difficult to keep in position when you slide it together with the frame back into the plastic housing.

you can buy sheets of airfilter foam - so that it does the job you want and isn't just cheap domestic foam that won't filter out the nasties. i recently bought some for my xl185 . search ebay , motorcycle parts , xl185 will get you there i expect

Gray is correct here use proper air filter foam, some foam does not like petrol fumes!!!If its an A4 silencer the foam just acts as a silencer to quiten induction roar anyway..Cheers Paul J

it is an a4 airbox silencer and have 10000,000000s mtrs of foam at work

No need to use anything special it's only a silencer and and it's very unlikely the concentration of petrol fumes would have any effect especially as there is a great 2'' hole through it to air it.If you want to be fussy I'd make more of an effort to find a foam with good sound deadening properties.

PS. whatever you use it wont be any worse than the original.
