Not that I remember.
Think they had a dull gunmetal type of finish.

I don't think any one will query if they are Zinc plated, I believe the early one's may have been Cadmium plated, which is now banned.
One point to note, the early Z1, Z1A's had drilled bolts (10mm hole for lightness) later Z900 were not drilled.

Lately, I have been known to be unreliable, as I have recently made a big mistake on another forum...willing to bet big money that I was right ~ Saying that the Pillion pegs "brackets" were the same as the above zinc bolts, only to find out later they were black! I'm still not sure if they were "black zinc" plated, if there is such a process.

Hi Gary, thanks for replying usually you can tell what the original finish is but i can,t with these, like you say they are just a dull metal.I will give them a clean up and see what they look like, maybe they were hardened and left unfinished
I will have a word with Mikey
Cheers

Hello Garn, thanks for the reply
Yes like you say mine are drilled and came out surprisingly easy, thought I might have a battle getting them out.
I,m going to give them a clean up and look for any clues along the way,the dark Black finish you were asking about i,m sure I,ve seen mentioned somewhere else, similar to the olive green (but black) might be zinc, sure someone will come up with the answer.
Cheers

FWIW, you can get black chromate for zinc.

I think i saw a home plating kit from caswell , and as an extra they can provide a range of "passivating" agents - yellow , olive and a black too , to darken down the zinc coating

Guyz,
Been meaning to do a couple for my "good" XS650, this thread prompted my arse into gear tonight!!!!
Made one out of a stainless 16mm bolt. Changed the thread from 1.25 to 1.5 to take a standard stainless nyloc nut. Have drilled it to install a 6mm grease nipple, so no more squeeking like Paul Dorans wallet!!!!!
All done on my lathe.
I'll do the second one tomorrow.
Jimmock the engineer.
