putting a new chain on the bike ,
when linking the 2 ends together is it best to do it on the bike and sprocket,
or can it be done off the bike, or does it make no difference,
reason I ask is looking on youtube everyone does it with the sproket on the bike

Easier to get the chain over the swinging arm pivot if you do it on the bike, otherwise you have to take the swinging arm off to put the chain on

Makes no difference but riveting the chain will make it endless and will require removing the swingarm to get it on if done off the bike.
Not a problem during a rebuild or if you've got plenty of time but a bit of a pain if you're in a hurry so usually done on the bike just for convenience.
