Dyna S timing

#1 PostAuthor: bigalhudson » Sun Dec 04, 2011 12:34 pm

Have now fitted my new coils and dyna s ignition and after a short blast yesterday seems to be running sweet. :D

I did a search on the forum to make sure I understood setting up and set the timing with a strobe to the timing mark approximately 1/2 inch to the right of 'F' adjacent to the arm pivot point. No problems. (@2500RPM)

What does seem odd is that I had to fully rotate the new dyna ignition anticlockwise to achieve this leaving no further adjustment. I would have presumed these units would set up roughly in the middle of the adjustment range ?

Any thoughts?

That seems to be the case. As they age you may find yourself elongating the holes to get what you want.
Be certain that you time both pickups as they are both moveable on the plate. Similarly ensure you have the corect clearance between the moving magnet and the tiny pickup point on the fixed bodies.

I have used gas jet nozzel cleaning files for this as they have a 'bare' end with no roughness and come in a set of various different and interesting sizes.
If you dont have the same clearance from one pick up to the other (ie same space between pickup and moving magnet for both sets) you will get different timing from one to the other.

Hope that makes sense when read.

I had this problem once before with a Z1R and could only get the timing close with the backplate fully rotated in the slots.
Turned out the wrong rotor was supplied in the kit (A common Dyna cockup)
Rotor has a number stamped on it either 3 or 3a (for the 900's and 1000's). can't remember which was the wrong one without going out to the workshop.
Will be in there tommorrow if you want confirmation.

I fitted Dyna S to my Z1 earlier in the year and also found it right at the end of the slots to get correct timing with the strobe. No more adjustment although I think once its set then it shoundnt need to be moved again.

Agree with Zed1015, I found all Dyna S's, when used on Z1 thru to Z900, no matter what rotor, are never in the "centre of adjustment".

I have tried rotors with 3, 3A and ones with no markings, and they are all bias towards being retarded, When correctly advanced, they "just" make the adjustment of the elongated slot. (probably 3A rotor is the best). Of late, I haven't had to elongate the slots, so, the Dyna company have modified the rotor, but not quite enough, as to test them with a slightly advanced trial!

Just had a quick look as promised.
All the zeds in there with Dyna's have number '3' rotors and 005 advancers, All are timed spot on with the mounting screws more or less central in the adjustment slots.
It was the '3A' rotor which threw the timing out beyond the backplates
maximum adjustment.
