ENGINE CHANGE

#1 PostAuthor: jimmock » Thu Nov 03, 2011 10:32 pm

Guyz, need some advice.

I have an old '72 frame. I have all the running gear etc but no engine. I sold it a few years ago for BIG money as the number was Z1E 00163.

I have decided to do something with it.

I intend to put a H***** CX500 lump into it and thus make it shaft drive.

My question is have any of you guyz done this before, and if so, what should I watch out for???

Any advice or pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I did the same thing myself a couple of years ago, except the other way round, I had an early 72 Z1 motor (possibly even a late 71) and put it in a cx chassis. It went in pretty easily so I don't think you'll have a problem Jimmock.

Great idea Jim,that potent mix of an early Zed frame and the legendary plastic maggot power will surely make one "unique" motorcycle, good luck with your project, look forward to seeing the pics in the projects section.

Jimmock, I guess the frame is also a low number and would be worth a bit. I appreciate your enthusiasm to have something different, however, what about another Z motor .. Z900 a4.... Z1R.
Tell me you will not cut the frame up!

Yes. ZIF 00139. Sept 72. With title (log book in UK)

I will only cut what is required and NOTHING else.

I do fancy something "different", and I believe this will be "different".

I reckon it will draw a crowd where ever I take it!!!!

I think the 8" overs would ruin it???

I did consider at one point putting in a SR500 big single, but as it is dry sump I decided against it.

I suggest you go for a parallelogram swinging arm. use the CX driveshaft on one side, but for that extra bit of nostalgia I would think that a nice piece of Oak for the bottom spar on the other side. For suspension do away with the shocks entirely and use elastic bands between the pivots. Damping being provided by adjusting leather washers on the pivots.
