Ignition problem?

Working on Z1000A2. Boyer Ignition and Accel coils 3.ohm.

1. Hard to start on the push button when cold.
2. Running ruff when cold.
3. Won’t start using kick start.
4. Ignition is on the timing mark and all installation is right.

When hot the bike is running great with no hesitation, but hesitation when
cold up to 3000.rpm. Even when hot using kick start doesn’t work.

New plugs and they are looking good. Carbs are cleaned and new
rubbers on intakes. Pilot ti right. Good spark when looking in the dark on all four.

The question is way do it acts like this? Just replaced the ignition
and the coils from using points and then it act like this.

Atth: Bike is stock.

Any help & info would be great.
:D

what was the bike running like before you fitted the boyer ignition?

When my friend got the bike she was running poorly.

That was just because there where so many points
at the bike at that time. It has been sitting for long time.

The carbs where full of crap and also with bad
points and spark plugs.

Now everything witch I can think of is clean and charging
Is just fine. New battery is fitted.

Still hard on the push button and even harder to use the kick
starter when cold. Cold start (Richer). Works just fine.

Took her for spin, Ruff when cold and running just fine when
warmed up.

Now I’m just thinking if the problem is something concerning
The Boyer?

May not be the Boyer - but Dyna usually out performs it - hands down

Have u checked that u have 12v at the coils?

if the bike was running fine on points and rough now, it has to be the Boyer. I had one years ago, it's supposed to be good system with digital advance but I just didn't have the nerve or luck to set it up correcty. Bought dyna S + coils, fitted and forgot, so simple and good

Compression is good.

12 volts at the coils checked,

Dyna S should solve the problem
with the Accel coils..., I think.

I’m sure the bike will be running fine
as soon as the ignition is in order.
Have been out in the garage most
of the day. Took her again for some
Test ride. Same, hard starting on the button
when cold and very hard starting
when using the kick-starter.

But great to ride when warmed up.
No prob starting on the button when hot,
But seems hard on the kick??
Idle is fine when warmed.

Well seems that my friend has to order
Dyna-S. I’m done.
Thanks all. :)

I would be looking at the choke system...

Yes I have been doing that.
Choke Seems to be ok, but there
is always this But?

One question. I have forgot how to test
Spark under compression. Plugs in?

Seem to be good spark looking at it,
but I remember in the old days working on the
Classics British bikes then the spark where
not as good under compression as testing it
lying outside when cranking the motor?

I think I will also use Ultrasonic cleaner on
the carbs, they seem to be clean as far as I can see,
but as we all know that’s not good enough.

I have replaced everything what doees matter
In the carbs,

Thanks again,
:??

if the bike has been standing for a long time replacing the jets + cleaning the carbs with carb cleaner is not good enough. there are air + fuel passageways which are impossible to clean with solvents. you will need to have them ultrasonically cleaned . as for the spark from the ht lead with a good electronic ignition the spark will easily be visible in daylight + should jump at least 8mm . i fitted an after market ignition a couple of weeks ago + the spark would easily jump a 20mm gap from the spark plug lead to the cylinder head cover

Thanks for the info. Yes as I mention, cleaning carbs.
They seems to be good, but often not good enough.

20mm that is a good spark! I will check on it and see
how it comes out.

Thanks again.
