Hi, my tacho is sitting at 2000 RPM when the engine is off. When I am riding the bike the revs fluctuate between 2000 and 5000 RPM. No higher. If I tap the face of the tacho the needle slowly jerks down to the zero stop. I'm reluctant to cut into the chrome band to have a look inside and I'm also not keen to squirt lubricant into the back of it in case it weeps up and out onto the face. I have only put about 6000 miles on a brand new tacho cable so I don't think that's the problem.

Any ideas?

i would say you have only got two options. get the one you have got professionally re furbished or replace with a new replica

With a small screwdriver you can open the band up by working your way round with it face down

the damping fluid has gone south, they can be fixed by those in the know, i believe there is also a magnet inside that looses its strength. best to get it fixed by a pro, its a closely guarded secret what fluid should be used.

i have heard that the repro units are very inaccurate, nut havnt tried one myself. also, thy do not have the ND on the face so are easily recognised as a repro, unless you put an original face on a repro clock, but this would cost as much as having yours fixed. hope this helps.
