Guyz,
After giving it many months of thought and running it past Big Fer and Ian Marshall, I have decided to "trike" my beloved Jaffa Z1. (Them Jaffas geeze me an 'ardon).
I wondered what was the best rear axle to use??
Any advice??
Jimmock.

Me thinks someone would beat you to death with something long and hard if you did Jim.

Superb idea Jim!...you really are going to break new ground with this one.
I believe reliant robin or the now collectible regal will provide a neccessary rolling chassis, although it would be a shame to ruin one of these tamworth icons by furnishing it with the running gear from a z1.

Kas,
I did consider the reliant rear axle (as that is the trikers no.1 choice).
It does mean getting the tubes cut and shortened. I have already made an "angle drive" to go from chain input through 90 degrees to shaft output. So this would allow me to use any rear axle with conventional flange input. I was considering the LSD axle from a capri but they cost £350 plus. The gearing is really long with a ratio of 3.05:1. Again it requires the cutting operation.
I have a rear axle from a V8 Scania tractor unit at hand. It has the bus diff fitted to allow a top speed of about 90mph (before speed limiters). This would mean running 22.5 inch wheels on the rear. This might be unstable at higher speeds.
Whats your thoughts on this???

You could save yourself some fabrication by running a sprocket off the reliants crown wheel and keep the chain drive (remember though to keep the diff packed with grease) then there is no need to shorten the left side axle shaft as the diff can remain in a central position.
Another popular option with the wannabe bikers is the Jag diff which has the added benefit of wishbone suspension and with the aid of some tastefully modified old bed angle you could utilse the original zeds shock mounts.

Of course, you could always use a Z1000ST quote:
worst shaft bike bike Kawasaki ever made as the basis, save all that aggro of joining chain drive to shaft drive

Trike a '73 Z1?
This must be a wind up.
If it isn't, step away from the bike and go and find something else to mangle.
Cheers....
