Hello,
does anyone know the Current Draw of a Z1-R Starter Motor? I'm looking for a more compact replacement Relay or use the built in one in an M-Unit (40A).
Mine is all painted so can't see any markings on it.
regards

why are you looking for a more compact relay. even the most modern relays are as big in dimensions as the z1r?

I don't wish to replace the Standard Kawasaki one as such but this thing shown below has a built in Starter relay which can take up to 30A and if the Starter Draw is less than that - well, bye bye relay.
These are just some random pics from the www - real pics when I receive it and fit it.
see here for more details of Horace:

I would say 30A wouldn't be big enough, You need to check the CCA of your battery, my Yuasa is 230A CCA, I use a Fireblade starter relay, small, built in fuse, rubber mounting and cheap from autojumbles

are you sure that this unit has a built in relay for the starter? i have looked at various wiring diagrams for this + it shows a separate relay if you expand the photo of the Suzuki that the unit is fitted to you will see the the starter wires are not connected to the unit

Hi,
I was looking to before I bought it but this diagram out of the manual shows some options:
also recommended SWG sizes & Current limits:
It has overload protection built in so I'll try it and see. Failing that I get hold of a Loop Ammeter and see just what the current draw is.

Just for info - I connected the Starter Motor directly to the M-unit and it flashes with an Over Current Fault. Meaning there is more than 40A draw on the curcuit.
So the original is now wired in instead.
