Ok i got my new harness in with the new switches and the new rectifier combo unit bikes starts great rev's great . But as soon as it starts to get warm it will not rev' It will idle but you go to give it gas just drops dead .

I know the timing is dead spot on and the carbs are dead spot on and the compression is great and the battery is brand new

My suspect is the Dyna coils

Get yer multimeter out then.

The DYNATEK site has details how to check it out

Yes i am going to have to test them out but is there a way i can get them hot to check them out other than running it and having to strip it down real fast :?:

Because i want to test them cold and hot just to be on the safe side i know they are old coils i think they where bought when Dyna first started to sell them

Classic Hall effect breakdown you need optical sensors thier not affected by heat

Optical sensors (aka: Pirhana/Newtronics) are defo not as good

Fox, seems strange for both coils to fail at same time and only when you give it gas?...If it is the coils breaking down when they get hot jury rig up a temp gas supply and run the bike till it gets hot,run a household cooling fan onto the coils and see if it cuts out then!
Other thought when you set up the Dyna did you time ingition dynamically with a strobe?....be interested to see how this goes..Paul J

Paul i did set it up with a strobe and the battery was my boats so it was not ran on the bikes power . I have a gas tank form my john boat that will work and i have a good fan i will give it a shot i just need to find a tee at the auto-parts store to hook the gas feeds up on .

Ok this is my primary test i used two multimeter s on the coils and both of them where at 3.5 on my good one and 3.8 on the cheap one

Now my secondary test would not work on either coil the meter was set on 200k and i got nothing on both of the coils

I have not run a hot test because with no reading on the secondary test at all i am :??

Input needed and a cold one two coils same thing

This may help Fox. They do look very old versions of green coils. What is the date stamp on them? Its the short code date format ; month and year.

Any signs of darkening inside the green body, either track lines or just dark patches. Cracks in the insulation are another giveaway.

Fox, hard to tell from pics but are you checking secondary coils resistance between the two ht outputs to the plugs? Paul J

Yes Paul i am pulling it from the neg coil side where the trigger is to the spark plug high tension leads both sides and get nothing :??

the coil dates read 3/80

I took the old lady's hair drier and heated the coils up with it and pulled readings on them warm still no readings on the high tension leads on both coils

Shouldn't you check HT - pole to pole (thru both HT lead connections :?:

As Mark says fox you should ne checking resistance between the two ht leads with the plug caps on

Ok i will check it that away i was doing it just like a car coil test like it said in my book

Yes thats correct for a car coil as in essence it is like a single cylinder bike one,!! Paul J..ps if you still get incorrect readings take off the plug caps and check through wires only i have had the plug caps fail more than once!
