Z1 Forks

Can anyone recall if the fork tube slides all the way to the bottom of the stanchion:?:
I've got a set of '72 forks on the bench at the moment, stripped all the damper rods etc. When I insert the new tubes they stick approx 100mm from the bottom and both sides are the same. Its been a while but I'm sure they should reach the bottom without being forced. Nothing in the manual either.

I've bought a Silicon carbide honing bar especially for the job but just wondered if anyone else had come across this? The internals look a bit grotty near the bottom maybe water contaminated the oil in the past.

Cheers,
Mike

i had this problem on my z1b but only on one side i purchased another lower fork leg + this cured the problem. you should hear a clonk when the fork inner tube reaches the bottom of the for leg

Thanks. I can't any reason why they wouldn't reach the bottom and the clonk is pronounced on some early Z1's.
I'll get the honing tool fired-up :D

I always find non genuine sliders always stick and need a bit of a hone. The trouble when chroming tubes is there is normally more chrome at the ends of the tube. Dont know why this happens buy I have had it lots of times.

It's called dog boning and is because the current density is higher at the contact points when electroplating.
