Hi,

Recently acquired a December 1978 Z1000 which has been stood for several years and is almost complete.

I'm looking to restore it to as original condition as possible but am having difficulty finding people who know about the bike, parts, Haynes Manual etc (most seem to detail bikes to 1977).

I understand it's possibly an American import, except that it is registered on what seems to be a standard UK reg "T" plate. All seems fine except it currently isn't running and indicators, original tail and a few other bits are missing. I have seen it running, but not for about 4 years and not whilst it was in my ownership.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to where to start? I'd be interested in chatting to people with knowledge & ideas, websites to visit, useful people to contact etc. I've got a lot of experience with bikes but this is a project we really want to get to grips with.

I'm in Wiltshire. I can supply chassis / model numbers etc to anyone genuine who has half an idea on the subject if it helps identify the bike.....

Please help if you can with the start of this really exciting project - I don't want to see it sitting for a few more years in my garage!

Thanks,

Jools

Hi and welcome, I too have a 78 Z1000 (look in project section for pictures) and mine is a US import, have a look at the V5c log book, does it say "originally registered overseas" have a look at the headstock notice, it will tell you where it was built, mine says "made in USA" also right hand switch gear, is there a light switch there?

Hello Jools, This site will supply you with a lot of information just ask in this section there is always somebody willing to help. If you want to PM your numbers to me I can confirm your bikes origins.

PS. Dump the haynes manual they are all but crap for a Z1000A1/A2.

If you contact Z-POWER,01942 262864,they will be able to tell you what model it is.You can check out their website via the links section at the top of the page.
Paid up club members get discount at Z-POWER.
Try and get hold off a genuine Kawsaksi workshop manual as they are the best. They are usually expensive new but regularly turn up on ebay.

try and get a clymer manual , internet book sites usually sell them , they cover z1000 kz1000 73-81 , i find them very good, also if yours is a usa import the engine nos and frame nos should starts with a kz i believe .
also if u contact z-power order a parts book from them.

Welcome to the site Jools, good luck with your Z1000, like others have said, take a look at Z-Powers site, that should be able to tell you exactly what model you have.
Haynes manuals- CRAP, try and get a genuine one, if not a Clymer.
