My KZ 1100 engine is partially stripped at the moment so this is a good time to clean the K & N-type air filters. Do I need to buy special cleaner or is a shaking in weak washing-up solution ok?
Do I have to oil them after they have dried out?

you need to wash out in a solvent of some type - blow with air line from inside to outside until dry - then re- oil using K & N filter oil
