I had dyna coils and dyna s ignition fitted to my Z1B. On a recent ride out the bike started to misfire on two cylinders then eventually stopped. I had to get it relayed home. When home i found that one of the coils had a cracked caseing and was burnt out. If i left it connected up it blew the fuse. When disconnected the fuse was fine. Replaced the coils with a new pair not dyna the old ones had only done 4000 miles. No spark now on any cylinders. Next checked ignition had 12 volt supply to pickups but no return supply when engine is turned over. Phoned dyna no help. Now thinking of changing back to points but do not have the cam for the ignition advancer unit. Can any one offer any advice as to what went wrong or has any one had the same problem. Does anyone have the cam or a complete advancer they want to sell.

The mounting of Dyna coils is critical. If the bolts & spacers are too short, the body of the coil is forced against the frame as they are tightened, and this will crack the plastic casing. mine are both slightly cracked, by last owner, but has wiped some silicon sealant over 'em and no probs for last 2000 miles

Correct Pigford I have yet to mount any Dyna coils to any of my Zeds without having to space them up away from the frame using alloy tubing. If not they rest on the frame rails and crack/split over time.

You're better to use brass tube - it dissapates heat better than alloy and dynas run hot on the cores.

Thanks for the advice. I think you may be right the writting on the underside of the coils is also imprinted on the frame. This may well have cracked the caseing but I dont think is the cause of the ignition failure. I e-mailed Jeff from Z1 enterprises ( what a guy what a guy what a guy ) he was very helpful, thinks it probably was the regulator that has packed up. The extra voltage could have fried the ignition. Also contacted dyna in america who are now on the case.
Still no luck with the auto advance or cam, any one got one for sale?
Someone must have fitted dyna s ignition and have this bit kicking around?

Padders, I agree with u, Rich thinks its a Brit Bike,
BRASS most bike now-a-days go for titanium & the like

No use getting upset now that you've finally admitted that you can't get in that jacket

too many pies!
Brass is used for its heat dissapation properties if you really want to put titanium on it you can but it probably won't work as well
