Just got my first Z1000 - lovely. But last recorded oil change is two years ago, so first job. I can not shift either the drain plug or filter bolt - is this typical and are there any tips to remove these please?

Mole grips on the edge of the bolt usually works

drain bolt you can possibly apply a bit of heat to the casing to crack the seal. you can't do that with the filter bolt obviously.

i use an exact hex socket (not one of the multi-faced ones) and then a longer breaker bar to apply pressure. not ideal as there is a risk of shearing but when i've done it its been ok and i really didn't have any other option.

no warranty implied on the above method................

Thanks for the tips - I take it this is not so unusual then. Any tips when re-assembling to make it easier next time?

1340fxd, this is common problem, I have seen a section about 2" diameter shear out of a sump, undoing the plug! Agree with Chrisu, that heat is required. I use my wife's hair dryer!

I think the only preventative solution is to use anti-seize when assembling. The filter drain is the same, however, you can usually undo the stem, leaving the drain plug alone, and replace the filter.

I have just tried ot remove my oil filter bolt and it is siezed solid like yours. Will try the hair dryer method and let you know how it goes. The nut is just beginning to round off so I have left it as I have been there before.

I bought an exact hex socket (not one of the multi-faced ones) and then a longer breaker bar to apply pressure - as suggested above. And luckily it worked a treat - no need to heat it up in my case.

The hex socket fits exactly to the bolt so no rounding off.

Wrap some ptfe (plumbers) tape around the thread before putting it back it

Thanks for the tips. I have ordered a new filter bolt just in case 'cos it has to come out by hook or by crook.

When both filter and bolt arrive from Z Power I will give it a go!!

I have been advised to put copper slip on the threads before putting it in. Seems to work OK.

Thanks for the tips. I warmed the engine up first then as 1340 advised used a hex bold but used a torque wrench and it turned with not bother.

Rich ptfe taped the threads it as suggested rather than copper slip.

Cheers guys
