Will any 3ohm coils work on a j3? or do they need to be specific to the bike

Yes,(I assume you mean the dynatec green coils) GB is running them on his latest project, I seem to remember Dynatec recommend the grey coils for J's & GPz's as the impedance matches the IC igniter system.
