My clutch cable outer sheath has been damaged by being pinched in the steering stops under the lower yoke. I've got a new cable ready to fit but I'm not convinced that the existing cable is routed correctly in the first place - Top or bottom!
At the lower end, should the cable pass inside or outside of the frame downtube before it disappears into the housing? - I've tried looking at pictures in Dave Marsden's and Micky Hesse's books and I'm sure I can see both options in use - which is correct?
The top end routing, via the headstock has never looked right to me and I'm conviced this has contributed to the damage on the existing cable. How should this be routed?

Clutch Cable Route

Hack, the lower end of clutch cable run, is outside the frame. This lower end passes between the 1st & 2nd exhaust header, thru a cable clip mounted on the down-tube, then down this right down-tube and into the outer sprocket cover..... it is a Z1 series we are talking about?
There is often a spring reinforcement on this lower part, to protect from heat of exhaust pipe. Look for the smoothest route from the handle bars. I think around the headlight shell and across to the right hand side.
Ensure you have the correct length cable, they are different with different handle bars. For the standard (high) bars, I find the after-market MotionPro # 03-0006, is perfect and has the spring (heat protection) section.
