Steering Stop Pin ~ Extension?

This question came up "off topic" on another site, however, I feel sure some of you experts will be able to answer it.
I believe this query is relevant to all Z1's Z900-A4's thru to Z1000 A1 & 2.
We all have seen the 15 mm diameter stop pin that stops the fork legs smashing into the petrol tank. we have seen this pin bent, welded and sleeved. we all appreciated that this pin has saved our tank paintwork often.
Now, all of us have looked at this pin and noticed that it has a lower extension by about 20mm and has a diameter of about 8mm. This extension section does not act as the stop pin and should not!.... So what is it for? A picture will be provided if some one does not know what I'm talking about.

If i remember correctly is that for the optional steering damper that can be fitted..
That's if i understand your question correctly.

Thanks for the pictures Hench.
Firyembers, sorry for the mis-information evident from pictures, it's only the Z1, Z1A & Z1B that have this 8 mm diameter extension. You could be correct about it being a part of a damper unit. I'm not sure if the earlier H1 & H2 have this.
I thought it may have been the development of a blinker cut-off mechanism.
It would be a good mystery to solve.
Another thought is, that it was used as a locating peg in a factory frame alignment jig. Anyone any more suggestions?

Hi Garn
No need for sorry...
Not where i was thinking it was at all..
Too central to be any good as a steering dampner fixing point.
Maybe an early attempt at a onboard locking device kinda idea as on the later frames lower down on the l/h side as Ginger Bear pointed out there was a similar hole that was really good at collecting water and eventually causing the side stand to fall off..

This is what I've been thinking (and I have trouble with that sometimes

) as well.

RGH, Firyembers, and Z903, there has to be someone out there in "Zed land" that knows.
The alignment jig .. location peg, seems to be on the money.
Possibly a welding jig.. location peg. To help and ensure correct positioning of engine mount , bracket fixture!
I have noticed the early Z1's have a hole drilled and tapped 8 mm on the left hand side of the lower triple tree... This hole, I believe, is related to the fitting of a damper on the LHS. Could this pin-extension also be related?
Someone has suggested it could be for the attachment of a central steering damper. Guys, get your "engineering history section" of your brain working!

The steering damper on my Z1a is fitter to the RHS as sitting on the bike. The is a bracket with pre drilled hole on the frame down tube and a pre drilled hole on the RHS of the lower yoke.

The pin is exactly the same as my early H1.
The central steering damper comes down through the yoke, through the stem and screws into the damper anchor plate that has the friction plates within it. The plate is anchchored as it fits around this pin.

BINGO!!! Thankz classkawa, when I spotted your re ply, remembered had this pic in my system.
None my frames have the hole for R safety clip, so KHI must of dropped the hole on the production line but kept the 8mm extension in place.
And look no. 4 bolt on damper mount.
So GarnZ what's the prize I'll go halves with classkawa.

Thanks Classkawa, Hi-C .
Funny that they used these pins on all Z1's, Z1A's and Z1B's.
