Just bought an 88 ZX10 and a 1983 Z1000 j3.The Z1000 starts fine but when you rev it is sounds like it's running between three cylinders and perfect,if you know what i mean. Not quite as bad as running on 3!When you rev it is just a very slight pulsing rev.I've just bought a carb balancer, what would the symptoms be of carbs needing balanced?

Yes, but they are not paired as per your problem.! One coil supplies Cyl 1 & 4, the other Cyl 2 & 3.
First job I would do is thoroughly clean out the carbs, the tank fuel filter, fit new plug caps and plugs.
When it comes to fitting new spark plug caps, make sure you fit ones without integrated resistors as it's these that often break down and give the symptoms you describe. All NGK plug caps have these fitted, and I don't like them at all.!
To add, make sure that all the old fuel is drained and disposed of... always use new fuel.

There is fuel getting to both the carbs at the faulty side, and im getting sparks. There is only one thick fuel hose going to the carbs from the tap,is this correct, and a little hose from the fuel tap going to a vent on the second carb from the left.Just to rule it out, would it be possible to tell me by looking at the coils if they are all going to the correct cylinders,he might have the leads in the wrong order?I like ruling out the simple things first lol!
After that i'll carry out what's been suggested,it is NGK leads that are on it by the way,any recommendations for leads?

As you suggest, it would be worth checking the coils are connected to the correct cylinders. If 3 & 4 are working ok, check that the coil that connects to no. 3 is also connected to No. 2 and the coil that connects to No. 4 is also connected to No. 1
I hope it's that simple a fix.
I've decided to pull the carbs (Mikuni) and while i was doing this with the seat off i turned round and noticed the negative terminal connections on teh battery were slack as hell!!,surprised it started!Wonder if this could have caused any problems?Hope not!Carbs are off,no turning back now!
P.S Can anyone tell me where a pilot or idle jet is on these carbs?I thought it would be next to the main jet in my pic,but it's blanked off with a black plug?
