hi all trying again to get my z1100r sorted out and striped the carbs for the eigth time now, to put in new fuel valve jets, any way my question is why is the bottom hole in the pilot jet orifice sealed with a ali plug, it seems odd, as the brass pilot jet screw has a fine hole in it at the bottom and for it to then have a ali plug fitted seems pointless to me or am i missing something, carbs are stock BS34
can anyone apply some logic for me

Hi Phill hows it going. Have you recovered the damage from the fall?

That is correct. They have a small alloy plug with an 'o' ring round it to seal off the lower part of the pilot jet drilling.

I believe the fuel enters that tunnel from a drilling in the side!
Air is drawn over the jet from the pilot air jet insert which is visible if you view the carb body from the intake side (atmospheric side)

The plug is held in place by; friction of the 'o' ring and by a small raised boss cast into the base of the float chamber.

The pilot jet is screwed into the body and is removable with a wide blade screwdriver.
It has its size stamped on its outer surface. Should be 37.5 i think.

One thing i noticed with my new float needles and seats which i bought at christmas was that the seat appeared to be slightly longer or narrower than it needed to be and the tang on the float assembly was fouling it preventing the float needle from closing correctly
ie. the tang hit the lower edge of the body of the seat before it could apply enough pressure to the needle to shut the fuel off.
The needles and seats came from NRP and the floats were in there already. The floats may be after market i cant say for sure but in any event, 2,3 and 4 wouldnt shut off properly.

thanks again mate,and the advice in the past as i said decided to dig her out and sort the tart out once and for all, so bought the needles and seats set from the new zealand about £7 a set, so not bad as i know 1 was leaking and the flooding was an issue last year when i spent a lot of time carb striping 7 times then gave up, but shes a nice bike and want to get her on the road now the suns out,
so thought i would do the carbs first, and just wanted to be sure that the plug should be there, but i can se what you saying so shall rebuild them again now, also have the colour tune which im relying on to set the mixtures up as the book says 1 1/4 turns out for pilot mix screw and the other says 2 turns for the r model, any way thanks again,
i have yet to sort out the oil leak on the cylinder head next and i stripped down the rear brake cylinder as it was stuck solid to the point where is was very hard to even push the bike,
but determined to get her done and ride her,
