just had a new unit delivered from lm spares which is described as a direct replacement for a z1000 a1 which was made in the same factory as the originals, i read a few threads about fitting this and found that there is a debate about 2 or three yellow wires. this got me a bit worried as the one they sent has 2 yellow and 1 black into a white connection block and 1 brown and 1 red/white, took it out to the bike to compare what i could see to find that the connection blocks on the bike have round pins and the new one has flat pins so it has to go back anyway. does anyone have the correct reg/rect they want to sell before i look at the wetdream option (will post in the wanted section also).
thanks wayne

Sounds like you've been sent a reg/rec unit for a single phase alternator.!
The Z1 has a 3-phase alternator, the reg/rec should have the following:-
3 x yellow (to alternator)
1 x black (to ground)
1 red/white (to 12V +)
1 x brown (to ignition switched live).
I would wholly reccomend an Electrex unit for your bike. The design and supply heavy duty, direct replacements for around £47 all in, with a long guarantee. Tel Electrex on 01491 682369.

2 yellow = no good. you have 3 phase alternator so need to have 3 yellow leads.
It will probably work but at best you can hope for 2/3rd of the maxmum output; not sure if leaving the other winding unconnected will be a bad thing or not.
