i have a 1976 a4 kawaskai z900, its not chargeing, i replaced the regluator and rectifier but it still isnt chargeing, i checked the rectifier and it is open circuit, the meter readings for the windingsis 0.9 ohms on all 3 windings, its clear to earth, in the, manuel it says the readings should be between 0.45 and 0.6 ohms. does anybody know if this is within working limits, any help apreciated many thanks noel.

Have you taken into account the resistance of your test leads?

Some meters have a "Rel" function which allows you to automatically remove the resistance of the test leads from the displayed value, this is particularly important when measuring very low values, as is the case here.

If your meter doesn't have this feature press the two test probes together and see what the meter reads, this is the resistance of the test leads and must be subtracted from the measurements when testing the alternator.

As the readings for all phases were the same I suspect the alternator windings are ok and the problem is elsewhere.

What's the history, was everything ok one day and then not the next or did the problem become apparent gradually?

You say you have changed the reg/rect, are you certain they are good and connected correctly? Is the battery definately ok?

Noel, agree with Hack, however, you say you have replaced your regulator and rectifier, were they "new" or used items? Is it possible to use your old replaced units as a comparitor to check the later fitted parts. Have you checked your alternator?

I do find the worst component on any Z1/Z900 is the standard regulator. I like them to read under 14.2volts at any time or revs. Any trouble or excessive voltage, I go with the combined reg/rect unit or a later model (ZRX) solid-state replacement.

thanks for the help hack and garn1 i think i might have it sussed i reckon the dodgy regulator blew the replacement rectifier i have just bought a rectifier and regulator on e bay so should have it fitted in a few days will let you know how it goes thanks again cheers noel hi pigford ive been really busy since i saw you last have hardly had a chance to look at the harris or the 900 hopefully will have this charging problem sorted soon and mabywe could meet up and go for a spin it was a good day at the ace nice to put faces to the names cheers noel
