Swing Arm Mods Z1000ltd

Has anyone done, seen, heard of or helped install a Aprilia RSV Mille swing arm into a 1970's Z1000? I've seen one on a 1981(?)Z1000 on ebay and it looked good. There must have been some complications I'm sure, but obviously it's been done. I asked him if the engine sprocket and rear sprocket aligned and he replied that it did by using a ZZR dished engine sprocket. I'm thinking of doing this on my Z1000ltd (Davy, it couldn't look any worse!!) and have already bought one on ebay for £30. Any advice would be welcome regarding the fitting. Any other advice or tips on how to dismantle my bike for very very cheap parts, advice on how to turn certain parts into everday living furniture or how to turn it into a wheel barrow will be joyfully accepted but declined.
So get your thinking caps on regarding the RSV swing arm!!

Just a word of caution,there were warranty claims with some of the RSV arms so you might want to check into this.
Probably worth checking with a long standing Aprilia dealer and/or internet forums.

Hi Jack, I read that on someone's ebay listing for a RSV swing arm saying that some were susceptable to cracking. I've not got the arm yet but I think it has a part number and hopefully a batch number so I'll take your advice and speak to a dealer.

Nigel, I presume you'll be running wider wheels with your new swinger. I run a 180 tyre on a 6 inch ZX7R rim using a GSXR SRAD600 swinger. 5/8" Offset sprockets are available from debben in 17 or 18t. I had a 19t 530 5/8 offset sprocket made by Talon (about £50-60) I then had the face of the sprocket carrier machined down by 8mm to move the chain nearer the wheel/tyre & keep it all in line. If my memory serves me right the early RSV swingers were the ones with the cracking problem, pre 1992. There are a few 1992 and above 1000R swinging arms kicking about as there were loads of warranty claims on them when they got dented by the can when the bike fell on its side.

If you want an rsv1000r 1992 one I know someone that has a spare (with a small dent) they may want to part with. If you are serious I'll drop him a line and ask how much if you want me to.

Hi Ginger Bear, yes I will be using a wider different wheel and tyre as the bike has those grim standard alloy wheels. Thanks for your input

Hi KWACKERZ1, I've bought a 2001 swing arm off of ebay for £30, not got it yet but still hopeful. It's bare, so I've got to source the other bits and pieces. Good old ebay. Sometimes

Thanks to all for your help and information on this, some might say, odd choice of swing arm. I've received the swing a few days ago and it is from a 2003 bike as it has the date cast into it. It is free from any damage, but now don't know whether to do the mod. I have to say that in standard trim the ltd is not an attractive bike and I want shot of it, I thought that by doing some mods to it, it would sell better. I'm not so sure I'd get my money back. Wish I hadn't sold my Z1B !!!!!
