Needs less Fuel!....seriously though have you set up the air screws and tickover as per the manual,it may help sort the tickover running problem and richness then as well.

Hi Hal
when I commissioned my 73 - with refurbed carbs/new jets etc - I found I had to set the idle screws to 2 turns out. One pot is significantly more.
Suggest you get a colortune kit - very good guide to combustion and easy to use.

I had similar problems with my Z650b1. I messed about for months and stripped the carbs twice and it still ran like a pig. I bought a colourtune and vacuum gauges which cost about eighty quid and all my problems were sorted. The carbs were set up as per the book but were miles out on the mixture and balance. Its as smooth as silk now and I would have still been messing now if I hadnt bought the kit.

Needle Jets! I think these little chaps are often overlooked. They don't unscrew & have to be drifted out. They are not included in most carb kits, so never get changed. They are also going to be affected by mechanical wear from the needle, unlike main & pilot jets whose only wearing factor is the amount of fuel thats washed through 'em.
Allens sell 'em at around about a tenner each

Still getting round to sourcing some for my Z1000

Important to get the fuel levels set correctly too. Have you got the correct emulsion tubes in? These were changed for the shorter ones during Z1 run, along with slide change etc to overcome over-richness at idle & low revs. Take a look at the service bulletin 1/2way down this webpage.

when the carbs were ultrasonic cleaned one of the drilling blanking balls did fall out luckily it was found in the bottom of the tank so i refitted it and checked all the others but its worth keeping this in mind when using a ultrasonic cleaner as they do loosen things off !!
