is there a way to pinpoint if its a switch or motor fault? battery ok and no "click" from the solonoid?

sounds like a solonoid problem.

Even if the starter motor is stuffed you should still hear a click from the solenoid.
To test if the starter motor is ok you could strike a spanner briefly across the starter motor connections on the solenoid.
If you have a multimeter you could check that the solenoid is getting power when the starter button is pressed.

Following on from Pasc,check you have continuity through the coil by testing across the 2 soldered terminals on the solenoid with a multimeter set on ohms you should get between 3 and 4 ohms.

you could always take the motor off then spin it up on a battery that would eliminate the motor if it spins .

yes steve i get 3.6 ohms. if a screwdriver across the 2 main terminals then the motor turns so not the motor, how do i test the switch?, tried various ways but not sure how it should be done. got the battery on charge overnight in case but did read over 12volts but died really quick when testing with the screwdriver. did think of jumping form the van without engine running.

Testing the switch; ignition off open up the switch body and with your multimeter set on ohms test across the switch contacts,you should have 0 ohms or there abouts with the button pressed if its high resistance(k ohms)it could be dirty or burnt contacts,if this is ok check for continuity from the dead side of the switch to one side of the solenoid(look at circuit diagram)if this ok turn on the ignition and check you have got 12volts on the other side of the switch.

think i need to get someone to look at it. button is ok power to it and from it when button pressed, dont really know what i am doing

This is easy stuff.
Now check for 12 volts on the soldered connections of the solenoid.
If its not there go between positive terminal on solenoid(the connection coming from the switch) and the battery negative terminal

ignition on or off, button pressed or not the only power i can find is on the main red terminal on the solenoid

The 12 volt control supply(from the button and negative) to the solenoid is via 2 bullet connectors(m&f)these are normally located behind the electrical plate have you checked these?

looked at the bullet plugs and cannot seem to get power to them with the button pressed byputting multimet into each in turn and also back to batt term, tried jump from the car but still nothing. as the sol is of i will take it to work and get a spark to have a look and confirm one way or another

solenoid is ok......got an autoelec coming thurs so watch this space

Hi ,the starter button switches the negative not the positive ,if my memory serves me correctly there is a contact to the handle bars fron the switch assembly make sure this is making good contact there should be 12v positve to one side of the solenoid when the ignition is switched on(small diameter cable )when you press the starter switch you make the circuit through the solenoid windings to negative(the frame) Hope this helps Paul J..

If the solenoid is oK and the start button is working have you seperated the multipin connector on the handlebar switch cable and looked in there?
