I've been looking around for a reasonably priced zed thou as a project/donor (don't ask!) and problems with the starter motor not working seem to be quite a common theme.

I know there could be any number of reasons but what is the potential worst case, ie would it require engine strip down?

No Matey, alternator side cover off, all mechanical parts are behind there, could be the starter motor, the gears that drive off the starter, or the throw out weights, could be wiring,

Or could be a simple fix like mine and the rotor bolt was just loose

is there a way to pinpoint if its a switch or motor fault? battery ok and no "click" from the solonoid?

I have a spare starter motor & a spare solenoid if you want to try substituting parts.

No GB, this is a hypo - I haven't bought another one (yet) but have been casually looking as I need something to throw the Zx front end on and zrx rear end and would rather do it to a thou rather than the Z1a. Probably coincidence but I've seen at least three advertised recently with the starter not working. Owners usually say it's probably something simple but then I think if it was that simple why not fix it? The cynical part of me thinks it could be something more costly/time consuming which is why I asked.

Starter moter & solenoid are an easy fix/exchange, so let's presume it's not them. Starter clutch is the only other probable suspect, which I believe will need the rotor removing, but it's all do-able. I guess a lot of sellers don't want to delve to deep into an engine, which can only be a good thing! Go on.............. Buy yourself another!!

Well the new owner is picking up my two GPZ 750s tomorrow so there is a bit of room in the garage again, just have to get rid of the pink zephyr now!

Seriously though, I reckon I could use another complete bike to finish off the ones I have partially built. It makes more sense than buying all the bits separately. At least that's what I'll tell Mrs CS when she does her next audit on the contents of my toy box

very simple to check out. jump from the hot(+) battery lead to the starter lead. If the starter turns over the engine look at your stop/run switch and solonoid for a problem.
