Hibernation

after much umming and ahhing, moved bike to side of garage, covered with cotton cover to hibernate it until Mach 2010. (make not to self to sew up cover where the basteard mice chewed it )

I ran engine up to warm, then turned off the petrol until it stalled in order to keep the carb bowls empty - prevent blocking up of jets - good or bad idea?

I guess a squirt of oil into bores via spark plugs would not go amiss.

Anything esle I should do to keep the old Z happy over that time? (no rude suggestions invovling exhaust orifices and privat parts please).

I read somewhere,years ago,.."cover bike in Margarine".The idea being it does not break down and is easily washed off with hot soapy water.Don`t think I`d put it on the paint work though.Some people cover it with WD 40
but this wouldn`t last as it breaks down oil based/protective coating.
I`ve never tried it.Let me know how YOU get on

The only thing about fueling I would add, is to add a little 'fuel stabiliser' to the fuel tank before running and turning the petcock off. Any fuel left in the carb (which there will be) will then not crystalize of congeal. This is available from most tool hire shops (HSS Hire Shop etc.) or fleabay.

I would also ensure you drain the fuel tank to stop a build up of moisture inside.
My mate used to store his old Zed without draining the tank, and after a few years the bottom literally fell out of it... Water is heavier than petrol and can corrode the tank from inside along the bottom seams.

Also ensure the bike is kept on its centre stand and tyre pressures are maintained.

Remove the battery and preferably wire in parallel on your car to keep it in tip top condition.

Turn over regularly by kick start.

is there any particular brand of margerine is preferable?

I have a bucket of virgin olive oil margerine in the fridge I could use. Do I also stick it insdie the exhaust?

I usually put my zed in one of those vac bags. remove battery, drain fuel etc and give it a good clean and polish. when it comes out it looks exactly like it was when i put it in. Me mate has a few bikes he keeps in these and one or two have been in for about 3 yrs and they still look perfect. Just need to check the air is out now and again by conecting it to the vacum cleaner.

Sorry Team, Hibernation is fo Bears. You guys need to move to a warmer climate. Come to Aust and you can ride all year.

vacuum bags are the biz, ive used them for years, just make sure your neighbours fecking cats dont p*** on them and it collects in folds or i bet they rot!

i get fuel stabiliser from garden machinery shops, briggs and stratton fuel fit, saves waiting on it by post;

also, if you dont have room for a bag, apart from the usual WD40/waxoyl, dust covers etc, get a green house heater, they are like big light tubes, about 100 watt, mount one on a board and put it under your centre stand, it keeps the dew point from forming and you wont get any condensation on the bike at all

I'm giving ACF-50 a go this year as recommended in CMM Mag and this forum. Messy apparently but chemically prevents corrosion for a year and winter riders swear by it.
