Hi all,
Great to have found this owners club - lots of useful info to be read
I have just bought a KZ1000 and the only annoying thing about it is a loud ticking noise which is apparently coming from the fuel tap
I've done the old trick of touching one end of a long screwdriver onto the engine, and the other too my ear and it's definately coming from the tap and resonating through the petrol tank.
Can anyone suggest what this ticking may be please?
Many thanks, Mike

Could be the countdown for a Moloctov Cocktail
You'll probably find the tank is in contact with the frame (metal to metal) and the ticking is coming from elsewhere.
My Zed makes some ungainly clangs and bangs due to this phenomenum
I've covered the frame under the tank with inner tube, but it still creaks a bit from time to time, worse as the fuel gets lower
Other than that could be somink in the tank, rattling around

does the noise go away when you take the revs up slightly?if so it could be caused by the pulsing of the vacum from the inlet(which the tap vacum is taken from),try joining two of the inlet vacum take offs together with a T piece and conect the tap vacum pipe on to it.
Thanks

Hi again,
Thanks for your input - I'll take the tank off today and see what's happening. I'll also check to see if the revs effect it at all.
I don't remember hearing it before I took the tank off the other day

so it could be either of those two suggestions - I'll let you know what I find
Cheers and thanks again, Mike

Hi zthou I have a KZ 1000 LTD . This has the US style rocker cover with a oneway valve breather thing. This makes a loud ticking noise as the reed valve opens and closes. I blocked mine off and cured the sound. You can see a picture of my bike on projects LTD. Hope this is some help , TIM
Thanks Tim

Hi Tim,
Thanks for that info. I took the tank off checked all the rubber cusions and can eliminate the tap hitting the frame somewhere. I guess you may have got the answer there. I'll look into that. How did you block it off?
Cheers, Mike

Hi Mike. I simply bent the piece of spring steel behind the reed so it now keeps the reed closed. This sounds a bit crude I know but it worked. Cheers , Tim.

My CSR has that emmissions pants too. I removed the reeds, cut a couple of bits of 3mm ally plate and used a bit of gasket sealer to block the reed holes. Load of of USA twaddle

I know I'm digging up an old thread here, but how loud is the ticking? My J makes a quiet tick a couple of minutes after starting which then disappears, but then reappears when it gets hot but as a more solid, metallic sound. I'm currently blaming cam bearings and end float, but could it be something as simple as this? I would expect the reed sound to be more consistent though and not really affected by temperature.
I'm heading to Germany on the Zed at the end of July and don't really want to pull the motor apart before then (unless garyd offers me bits at a price I can't refuse!

) , particularly as it hasn't got any worse in the year and a bit since I bought the bike...
