Paul, once you've knocked out the old one's, put the new ones in the freezer for an hour or so, this will 'shrink' them slightly. Best method then is to use a bit of threaded bar passed through the headstock, with some large washers or metal plates. Once youve got the bearings 'square' just do up the nut's & 'wind' the bearings in.
Easy peasy

Also when it comes to the inner race for the lower yoke put the yoke in the freezer and tap into position with a close fitting tube,speed is quite important as the frozen parts will start to expand in the warmth. good luck.

you can put the bearings in a tube of oil and heat up the oil. (unless someone says it is a really bad idea - that is wot I did when fitting bearings on English axle halfshafts)


oh, and my question - how do you support the front of the bike to remove the front wheel/forks gubbins?

The hardest part of fitting taper roller bearing to head-stock is the removal of the bottom bearing race. If it also is a taper roller bearing, then there is not much edge to hit it out. I have seen welders simply electric spot three equidistance spots on the race and they fall out.

There is a strange phenomenon when hitting out the old (conventional) bottom bearing ... It tends to skew and the more you try and correct it, by applying force to the opposite side the worse it gets... so try and keep it square all the time.
