Powder coating
I think this has been mentioned before, but I need to get it off my chest! At the Stafford show, somebody told me that Bournes, the powder coaters in Birmingham had closed, so, being a dimwit, I never bothered to check, and took a pair of wheels to a firm located just south of Birmingham who do coating, but also specialise in shot blasting, and advertise in CM as "seen on TV". I've had the wheels back, and can only describe it as a disaster. I've since found out that Bournes are still very much open - they've taken a look at them and reckon they've been left too long in the stripper, which has started to eat the metal. With a bit of luck they can be rebuilt with welding ( and a lot of cash) but if they were magnesium they'd be scrap. So, everyone in the midlands, please be aware that "as seen on TV" should say "as seen on crimewatch"!

Hi NinjaB
Just a personal preference but I'd chose a two-pack paint finish over powdercoating, particularly on wheels which are in the firing line - from ham-fisted tyre mechanics as well as the road!
Doug Cox at RD Cox in Reading is DAH MAN for 2 pack - the finish is more 'flexible' than p/c and resists knocks better in my experience.

I always think that polished rims with painted center's and spokes are the way to go. At least the tyre man cant scratch the paint, though i usually change the tyres myself, and just let them balance them.
as for powder coating i always use triple s If you want polished rims most places wont powder coat them afterwards. Its too difficult to get a straight edge etc.

I have used Bournes for years and always thought their work was ok. Last year I tried Redditch shot blasters and personally thought their finish was superior to Bournes. Central wheel in Coleshill have there own powder coating plant now and they do a lot of wheels. Stripping can often be a problem with platers and powder coaters. I have taken zinc plating in and they have left it in the acid for stripping for too long and ruined all my stuff.
The problem with some powder coaters is that one day they are doing some garden furniture or metal railings and the next day they are doing a z1 frame and sadly treat both the same! To some of them its just a piece of metal and they dont realise it could be your prize winning pride and joy.Got to agree with Maine that painting is a better option and will last just as long if done right. Jerry, if I were you I would ask for compensation, especially if they are damaged. I made the zinc platers who ruined my stuff pay for everything.
