Idle setting - carbs....again

#1 PostAuthor: kwaknik » Sun Oct 25, 2009 12:55 pm

First thanks for the help previously on dealing with the sticky carbs. All the slides return smoothly when the thottle is shut after abrading with fine emery. When I re-assembled the carbs I set the slides in accordance with the manual but the idle sped won't drop much below 2000 rpm even with idle screw wound right out. On inspection the closed throttle cam adjustment cannot be adjusted so that it is clear of the web so is always keeping the slides open at last 4 times the gap that was set. In addition the open throttle adjuster has to be wound right in and still won't stop the slides going out of view. It is as if the linkage is a few degrees out of alignment but since it is located positively in the connecting shaft I can't see how this could happen. Hopefully this is reasonably clear to someone and you have some ideas what it is.
Bike got it's MOT this week so want to get out on it!

sounds as if the slides are set to high to start with and won't go down far enough staying partially open , if the carb tops are taken off and slides lowered using the adjustment to lower the slides until they are right down, at the same time adjust the tickover screw so it is not contacting the web,you then set the slide heights as stated in the manuals, put the carbs back on and set up with vac testers you should also be able to adjust tickover then, hope this description is understandable. best of luck.

Thanks for the reply Kev. Sounds logical. I will try that. Maybe we should have a competition, quickest to strip and rebuild carbs blindfolded. Should be plenty of capable participants!

according to the book - this being the haynes? i try to follow that but it went on a bout notches WTF? I cna see no notches so I did it my way - the logical approach.

I set them so that when the idle ajust know was turned maybe 1 tunr, I could just about fit a small wire, maybe 0.5 mm in the gsap between slide and carb body. then when the knb is turned other way, they sholud be in closed position.

It was quite a time consming job as when I adjusted one gap, the gap in another carb owuld change, then I adjusted thatthe gap in antoehr owuld change and so on. could really figure out why not what the pattern was but after some time, the gap was made equal.

if both throttle cables are loose, then you should set the idle using the know to around 500 rpm or less. I found that the closing cable needs to be done yp quite tight as when cracking the throttle open, the revs would drop to 2,000 and kinda stay there = not good.

Well have re-adjusted the carbs with the help from you guys. Big improvement as can set the idle to just over 1000 revs and throttle response is better. Yet to road test but looking good. So mot'd, sorted and just insurance required....and winter Doh! Thanks for the help and will have to get out there and meet up with you Zorded.
