Clocks [lighting]

#1 PostAuthor: Z1B Alan » Fri Oct 16, 2009 6:26 pm

Today I decided to find out why the brake stop lamp in the clocks dose not work with the answer being a simple blown bulb. The bulb in question is 12v 3.4w the only one I can find localy is 12v 4w is the 0.1w differance important :?: .Whilst on the job the clock bulbs themselves are very weak so I think I wll replace them as well. These bulbs seem to have a shiney coating iinside what is the purpose of it and do the new bulbs have to be the same. I know its only a minor point but I want to get it right.

You mean 0.6w !

Bulbs available here are 4w and therefore slightly brighter.

3.4w bulbs come up on ebay from time to time.

The shiny coating inside is the tungsten filament condensing on the inside of the glass. This happens as the bulb nears the end of its life.
Change them all and your world will be a brighter place.

yep ^^^^ what they say.

the flamant evaporates over time, ending up over the glass, eventually the filament gets so thin its snaps = end of bulb.

the halogen in halogen bulbs is there so that is reacts with the gas, then the compound hits the hot element and decomposes so the metal land back on the filament. this makes them last a lot longer but again, given enough time the filament will fail as there is no guarantee that the deposted metal lands on the exact place.

anyways, have you considered fitting LED lamps?

you can make your own see here although prices are dropping.

I know these concourse competitions are serious stuff. But checking the wattage on the idiot lights is a step too far.

I can't believe anyone would pay £25 for a bulb if you would there is no hope for you. I purchased 10 bulbs 4watt at the stafford show for £1.50 fitted them and they work perfect I doubt anyone could tell they were 0.6 watts brighter.
