Get some TFR (traffic film remover) and brush some on.Then wash it off,a hot power wash will help. Please be aware that neat TFR is strong stuff so be carefull with paintwork, etc.

I've never prsonally used it, so please check it out first, but if the engine is reeeelly shitty, mister muscle oven cleaner works wonders, but wash it off after 5 mins each application.

and your best to neutralise the alkaline after with a wash of one part vinegar to 50 water.

If you're careful, you can used an acid based water soluable cleaner like Ali-brite, but be aware this will remove the cad or zinc from your fasteners if you leave it on too long, so use it on small areas at a time. Apply, rinse, several times. The acid removes oxides from the ali leaving it 'bare', so you need to dry the engine off after the job, don't leave it wet or you'll have a furry white oxide-coated engine next morning!

Any ali wheel cleaner will do the same job, so will brick cleaner for that matter - but dilute that stuff first - it's fierce!! Lastly, protect the cleaned area with a preservative oil like Motorex.

you can't beat GUNK, brush it on or spray and brush, work it in and jetwash it off. Works wonders.

i use muck off, and a cold gentle pressure wash on my z1b. Be careful of the steam cleaners and solvents, saw a z1a that bernie at beezees had done and it left him with a lot of work polishing up all the covers as they all went milky!
