Hi all, I've got a 1978 KZ1000 with 900 barrels on it and as it's running rough as heck I think I need to check the carbs. Problem is I have no idea what carbs are on it, 1000 or 900 or what variant. There are 2 fuel inlets on them. Does anybody know how I can tell different ones apart.
Many thanks
Steve

My z1000 has had many different carbs over the years. Currently I’m running a set off a Suzuki. If yours have twin fuel pipes its safe to say they’re from a Kawa. Next, does yours have the traditional pilot airscrew on the side of the carb? A1’s and A2’s didn’t have this screw but they do have a by-pass screw underneath, set into the front of the float bowl.

Those 900 carbs will work fine with K&Ns providing they’re jetted right.
But first, get yourself a Gunson Colourtune ( http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stor ... &langId=-1 ) and get the mixture right at tick over.
If there’s any difference in the number of turns of each air screw you’ve got a blocked jet or passage.
The air screws should be between 1 and 2 full turns out. Ideally, 1.5 turns out. If they’re not, you need to change the pilot jets.
This of cause is assuming you engine and ignition are both sound.

Thanks for the replies. The K&N's will have to stay as I don't have the standard airbox unfortunately. I couldn't tell if it has got a big bore kit fitted to be honest.
The engine will run but it will not tick over and it runs intermittently on different cylinders which is why first off if I could find what carbs were on it then perhaps I could find what jets were required and all the other settings. Process of elimination I suppose.
