Yep.... back in the late 70's a mate (Paul Hickman) had a GT750 - on centre stand, bike idling in 1st gear - tin of grease - on chain - OUCh - tip of thumb gone :??

See, centre stands are lethal - take them off NOW :!:

do you know what, last week me and the girlfriend were sat in the van, turning the key to go away for a few days, phone goes, 20 mins later we are in accident and emergency, her dad had chopped his thumb off on the saw bench. i said he'd need a lift home, it would be useless trying to hitch :lol:

i was told to hold off with the thumb jokes for a bit :roll:

I often have to work in some seriously precarious positions often at great height and with potentially dangerous tools and consider myself experienced enough to do my job safely, but! I've also seen too many accidents happen to people of similar experience to know that a very serious accident is never very far away from any of us no matter how careful we think we are.

thats right Steve, could be any of us. this lad has made a mess of his fingers, not a pretty sight. i just removed the saw bench from the old boys workshop today, he's in no rush to loose another digit.

probs is peeps do not take into account the result of an accident but just the probablilty; it shold be a weighted thing.

for example you can expect to fall off trying to walk along a 6 inch wide beam 3 feet above ground but if you do, nowt bad would happen.

now you may not expect to fall off a 3 foot wide beam but the consequences are rather more serious if it is 100 ft above ground.
