z650 carbs

#1 PostAuthor: irhobotolo » Tue Aug 18, 2009 6:30 pm

These carbs are for sale on ebay. They are listed as 26mm ? . The carbs on my 650B1 are mikuni VM24SS ?. Has he got his facts right and I thought the 24mm slide carbs were used right up to 81 on the 650f2. I am curious to know why these are special as I thought B1 and B2 shared the same carbs. Are the pilot screws not always in the same place and are they realy so rare ?

They are VM24's, the guys not right on that score i'm sure.
All the Z650's up to and including the F2 used the VM24SS, then CV carbs onwards.
If you measure the front aperture with vernier calipers they measure 26mm, apparently the 24mm is in reference to the opening closer to the slide, I know this as I just very recently measured mine to think they were 26's, on queries with a knowledgeable bloke on another forum who runs a carb rebuild service I was told the above which makes sense, (my only concern was whether float settings differed)
Some had the fuel mixture screws underneath like these, you can see the plastic limiters on three of the mixture screws.
It's quite likely just the early ones did and the later ones have the air bleed screw, (which I think is easier to set up and certainly easier to adjust whilst fitted).
TBH, I don't think they're that rare and I do think he's taking the wee wee with the BIN price for a set of scrap carbs, (he states himself needs a complete overhaul), you can pick up a set of VM24's for £10 - £20 from ebay.

I'd be tempted to ask him why he thinks they're 26's, just curious if it's the reason I mentioned above.
