What is the best way to get the engine out of my z900 without scratching any paintwork ect and is it a job i can do myself or is the engine to heavy

they are very heavy - around 220lbs - you really need two sets of hands to do this.

What helps is removing the cam cover and exhaust studs. If you plan on pulling the head, do that before removing it from the frame. You can also drain the oil, pull the oil filter, filter cover, oil sump and oil pump from the engine before removing from the frame.

If you plan on totally pulling the bike apart for refurbishment, then when you reassemble, consider not putting the engine into the frame, but rather the frame over the engine - you lay the engine on it's side (on padded blocks, and lower the frame over the engine.

I removed my motor recently and to protect the frame I taped corrugated cardboard to the frame rails with copious amounts of gaffer tape which worked at treat with no damage whatsoever. As Jeff said, the motors are heavy and it took 2 pairs of hands and a trolley jack under the sump to get mine out then back in again. Removed and installed mine whole cos my engine builder will only work on motors out of the frame, so its possible to do it but far easier/lighter if you remove the head/barrels first.
