Guys - I'm stressing. The more threads I read the more I feel my bike's gonna go wrong! Im off to do a couple of thousand miles next week. I'm a bit skint right now - but.....
although i have dyna s fitted, i'm still running the original (i think - they re grey) coils and the original reg and rectifier. Do you think it is a must to change the coils and go to combined reg/rec?

am i a hypocondriac (prob spelt wrong)!!

i`ve found the z engine to be very reliable, the only problem , aside from old wiring, main bulbs (vibration) was the reg/rectifier, tho this was on a zthou.

Rich, ive looked into this quite a bit, it seems you only need to upgrade the coils if the bike is high tuned.standard coils ok. i also know from this site that a lot of people use the standard seperate reg and rec units with excellent results. if youve seen my recent thread about spewing oil, dont let that concern you, its my own fault, i over tightened a bolt on the cam cover, hence oil spill. having said all this, i know you will want to hear from members who are in the know. but what ive said, is what ive heard on here. enjoy the trip Rich.

oh and check your final drive sprocket, especially if it has the simple tab washer. Mine came undone after buying my first z.

I think its in most peoples insurance any way, mine is with Footman James £105 a year including breakdown ins.

Have a great trip Rich, take lots of pics. I would take spare plugs, gear to repair puncture a spare clutch cable and some cream for piles :?? . Other than that I am sure you will be fine, very envious!!!

Rich,

Just done a tour of about 1000 miles through France and Spain, took a good set of tools, a spare coil, set of points, couple of inner tubes. None of this was required as the Zed was faultless! Other considerably more modern VFRs/CBRs in the group suffering a number of minor electronic and gearbox problems but not the Zed! The only problem I had was after a high speed run the KZ900 side panel badges became detached due to vibration, my fault for not using silicon to secure! Yes I did change the reg/rec for the combined unit sold by Z1-Enterprises becuse the old unit was 30+ years old, but was still functioning OK so I probably did not need to!

Do the sensible things before you go, take a couple of cables, split link for the chain and a inner tube (not very common now).

Check the oil whenever you have a chance and enjoy the trip.

Bit of break down cover is worth getting, if you belong to the AA or RAC you can just extend the cover.

I took the Harris to Sweden via Calise the other year, almost a 1000 miles in just over 18hrs. Couple of oil top ups on the way another 700 miles while there and a quick trip back via Denmark.

The Z engine seems to enjoy this kind of trip.

Been all over Europe and Scandinavia on bikes in the past all the way to North Cape on a Guzzi.

Bikeing abroad is great always had agreat time.
