my phone line is down today so am on next doors broadband. could anyone let me know what the possibilities are with regards to a lot of oil coming out of the back of the block, covering my leg. could it be head gasket, if so should i ride it home? about 10 miles. could it do more damage?

Mick, can you pinpoint what area at the back it's coming from ? Is it up high or down low ? Could it be the tensioner gasket ?

If there's' a possibility that the oil had become contaminated with fuel from an overflowing carb then i would suggest that you dont drive it.
If its from the head gasket then dont drive it.
If its from anything close to the oil gallery plug then dont drive it.
If its from the breather then dont drive it.
I cant think of anywhere where i would feel that that amount of oil coming out would be inclined to make things better by driving it especially if it gets on the rear tyre.
Mick, youre in the shit so stop digging, reference your other post; drastic action is not what is called for here. Been going through this for two years now and just starting to see the end of some of it.
You have pm.

Mick, a tensioner gasket is no more that a pound or two. I'ts a fairly easy job but if its your first time then make sure you understand what you are doing or have someone that knows check out the job after as do it wrong and you could end up with bent valves.
How was the bike running immediately before you noticed the oil ?
As Al said, with these symtoms don't ride it until fixed.
ps hope the op goes smoothly.

You may have blown the cam end rubber as that would spew oil down your leg, it's surprising sometimes how much mess you can get from even a relatively small leak. Identify the source of oil before using it.

If it's the tensioner gasket Mick , i have one you can have , just email me your address and i will send it to you , or is it possible it's coming from where the rev counter cable goes into the head ? it's suprising how far round oil travels .

got the bike back this evening, rocker cover gasket has been pushed out a bit, oil around the top. the relay guy was a mechanic of old, has owned all the 70's bikes, he said it looked like rocker cover gasket. will replace that one first guys, then see if it still spews the black stuff. i will have a closer look tomorrow, will check it for petrol smells hillbilly, need to chill now, bit fried, but a glimmer of hope has been found, thanks for the support
