If your replacing the rubber guide wheels etc is it necessary to
replace the top idler wheel and cam chain tensioner as well or should you just replace the whole lot anyway

Really depends what condition they're in, but with the exchange rate being so good I've just replaced the whole lot for Liska ones in my lump.

Mikey welcome to the world of the zed engine rebuild, most zed motors are nearing or over thirty and moving parts wear/deteriorate,so what can start as a quick strip check and rebuild can turn in to ??????.What i do is if the parts worn or suspect it gets replaced, its just not worth it not to,once its back together thats it for another ten years

I know just how you feel Mikey, I've also got a money pit. Made the mistake of refurbing the head and camchain gear, thought bores etc OK. Couple of smokey runs prove otherwise, so the money spanners been brought out for yet another strip down and rebuild.

Mickey, Regarding that cam chain gear. What I have found is many of the cam chain sprockets are OK, except that the top idler sproket and the two idler sprockets break down in the rubberised bearing bush. You can check them when they are off the engine by holding the bearing outer bush and check that it and the teeth of the sproket, are one unit.
Some speed-shop specialists disassemble the units and remove the rubber, replacing it with a metal bush.
The cam guide often gets two groove in it, if they are not too deep forget it.
The cam roller (lower middle posn.) often gets chain ripple on the circumference. If they are not too severe leave it.
Inspect chain adjustor end if smooth leave, Check spring has tension.
RegardZ.
