Z900 with GS1000 carbs

Hi again all,

Well, thanks for your advice on my previous question. As a result I've bought a set of 28mm carbs from a Suzuki GS1000 to go onto my lovely new Z900 engine, mmm....

Now, the next question is....given that I'm going to run the bike on K&N's or similar, I realise I'll have to jet up to compensate for the lack of an airbox.

What sort of increase do I need to be looking at, also, what is the standard jetting for a '76 Z900?

I really appreciate your advice guys, can't wait to get this project off the ground!

Cheers all,

Gordon.

Standard A4 jetting for original 26mm carbs. :- Pilot 17.5
Main 115
Needle jet 0-6
It will probably be trial and error with the 28mm carbs. and will largely depend on the exhausts you intend using.

Forget the jetting for the 900. Std Gs1000 jetting will be close for the 900 with open carbs but go with a 10% increase on the main jet as a starting point. You may need to fit larger pilots or source some air corrector (restrictor) jets for the pilot air circuit to compensate for the extra air provided by the loss of air box ( These tap into the air passage way at the carb mouth ).

Thanks for the info fellas. I'll see what's inside the carbs to start with then take it from there.

It's nice to be on a forum where people are willing to give advice.

Cheers all,

Gordon.

As a matter of interest does anyone know a current source for these? I've got Ledar ones in my carbs from years ago but since Leon Moss died I don't know if anyone else ever did them... They certainly helped the std pilots cope if you take off the airbox

re jets etc

Not wanting to belittle the late Leon Moss, his work was inspirational.

I am of the opinion ,that jets can be filled with araldite/solder and then drilled out with a jet drill to a smaller size.

I have drilled out the mains(oversize) on chops with good results.

There is a book worth reading if mucking about like this.Four stroke tuning in theory and practice by A.Graham Bell insightful worth it just for background info if nowt else.I ought to be on a commission:lol:

Worth a look as I have not seen any ledair(sp) kits around for many a year.

regards

drew

I haven't actually tried anywhere as I don't actually need them, but I think a lot of people trying to sort out carbs without an airbox might benefit from having them that's why I asked. Allens would sell you bigger pilot jets probably.
