Must admit I'm getting the feedback from you guys that I needed. Will keep an eye out for a frame/rolling chassis that I could adapt.
Cheers again

Hello Zshed, The GPz1100 engine is fairly easy fit into the Z650 frame, minor frame mount modification and the cam cover screws need to be countersunk into the cam cover to clear the fuel tank, you will also need to move the fuel tap and the exhaust will run close to one of the down tubes, but this conversion has been done a few times. A friend has raced his 1170cc Z650 for a few years now and would often embarase hayabusa's at Santa Pod, also has nitrous fitted and runs low 9's, as well as winning the classic class at places like the bUlldog bash, the bike loks like a stock Z650  To answer your original question the Z1R engine is longer than the GPz1100 (it does not have the kickstart behind the clutch) and the extra length will cause problems, it can be done but is nowhere as easy or practical as using the 1100 engine. Regards, Steve

easy to fix that though, and it really looks like a zed ,so many do away with the clocks and headlight that give the unmistakeable zed appearance.
all in all a very nice looking bike

If you put a Zed motor in a Z650 frame one problem is you have to take the engine out to shim it as the rocker cover won't come off.

Camcover, cylinder head and block all remove easily in situ with the GPz1100 engine in the Z650 Chassis

Is there quite a big difference in size in the early engines and the later ones then Steve?

frame,

Hi mate,
I have a mk11 frame that I bought Monoshocked, and braced with the rear twin shocks removed and sub frame modded.
It is heavily braced for a turbo drag bike, and I have the cantilever steel swing arm and de-carbon style shock with it and a cma that came with it.

A friend made up and refitted the twin shock mounts but the frame wont take standard tailpiece/sidepanel bodywork. I used to race it with a single seat and a zir tank, but it will take a mk11 tank.

The v5 was transferred years ago to another bike so the frame is unregistered also.
I have been keeping it for a rainey day project but its probably not going to get done so I would consider, reasonable offers on them if your interested.
Drop me a pm and I'll try and get some piccies together.

Hello Chris, yes the GPz1100 has a camchain guide blade in the camcover and is flter in profile than the earlier Z which has the taller camchain guide wheel assembly, this prevents the camcover removal, the GPz1100 is also shorter as there is no kickstart shaft and can sit a little lower in the 650 chassis, the lack of kickstart shaft and housing allows more room around the clutch basket, so the complete clutch can be removed without seperating the crankcase halves
